Biodiversity and ecosystems underpin many national and global economic activities, including those related to agriculture, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture, energy, tourism, transport and trade. Biodiversity conservation and sustainable use can lead to higher productivity, more efficient resource use, and long-term viability of resources.   There is also a need to integrate the ecosystem approach into agriculture, fisheries, forestry and other production systems that have an effect on biodiversity. Management of natural resources, according to the ecosystem approach, calls for increased intersectoral communication and cooperation at a range of levels (government ministries.

Natural resources play an important role in the Philippine economy. While agriculture, fisheries and forestry represented about 9 percent of GDP in , they accounted for nearly one-third ( percent) of total employment. Equally important, natural capital provides energy, water, flood control, storm mitigation and other environmental services that benefit the entire. Ecosystem services in urban areas In the following we provide a description of ecosystem services provided by urban ecosystems, Water supply Securing water supply in cities in the face of climate change is currently a major challenge (Fitzhugh and Richter, ). Ecosystems, such as forests, lakes and wetlands, capture, filter and store water used in cities for drinking, irrigation and other.

Biodiversity Biodiverity and the Ecosystem Approach in Agriculture the Ecosystem Approach in Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. The Satellite Event held during the weekend of October and reported in these Proceedings examined agriculture, fisheries and forestry using ecosystems approaches.

The event was organized by FAO’s Inter-Departmental Working Group on Biological Diversity. FAO's biodiversity programmes apply ecosystem approaches to stimulate community level education and experiential learning by rural people.

The same approaches educate national policy makers wishing to fulfill commitments made to environmental treaties while still meeting agricultural production. A Satellite Event on Biodiversity and the Ecosystem Approach in Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries was held on the occasion of the Ninth Regular Session of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, in FAO, Rome, October Biodiversity and the Ecosystem Approach in Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Satellite event on the occasion of the Ninth Regular Session of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.

Inspired by the work of the renowned fisheries scientist Daniel Pauly, this book provides a detailed overview of ecosystem-based management of fisheries. It explores the complex and interdisciplinary nature of the subject by bringing together contributions from some of the world's leading fisheries scientists, managers and conservationists.

Ecosystem approach is conceptually similar and therefore currently used in a synonymous way to ecosystem-based management and ecosystem management. Key themes addressed throughout these concepts are: the protection of the environment, systems thinking, spatial scales, sustainable use and the human component.

The ecosystem approach is the primary framework for action under the CBD. Applying the ecosystem approach to your sector. Various sectors involved in the use and development of natural resources, such as agriculture, fisheries, forestry, and water resources, have adopted their own approaches towards addressing diverse and complex issues related to the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity.

A number of departments and agencies have responsibility for matters relating to biodiversity and agriculture, including the following: Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries The National Biodiversity Economy Strategy is at the heart of promoting guardianship of wildlife within communities.

Owen, in Encyclopedia of Geology, Types of Biodiversity. Biodiversity is variously defined in terms of genes, species (or higher taxa), or ecosystems.

The genetic and organism components have been combined by many authors and, in many palaeontological studies, a clear distinction is now commonly made between taxonomic diversity and disparity – the degree of morphological.

Aboutha (or %) of Burundi is forested.Published in three other languages and growing, Managing Biodiversity in Agricultural Ecosystems takes a look at how farmers manage, maintain, and benefit from biodiversity in agricultural production systems.Agricultural biodiversity – from seeds to soil organisms to pollinators – underpins agricultural production and has an enormous utilitarian value for humans.

Agriculture is also dependent on a range of ecosystem services like nutrient cycling, soil formation, water purification, atmospheric regulation and pollination.
